Trains sets have been captivating children and adults alike for decades. A magical combination of movement and miniaturisation - coupled with the unmistakeable hypnotic sound of the engine and the wheels trundling along the track - still manages to delight and excite even the XBox generation. (Hornby had put the words 'play' and 'station' together long before Sony was even born !). Hornby DO have a range of digitally controlled toy trains nowadays (for precise individual control) but that only changes the guts of the engines; on the outside of the models the classic designs continue to be preserved and built to the same exacting standards as ever.
Scalextric, too, has a mixed fan club of young and old. Again, we get a buzz from becoming part of a miniature toy world but the excitement is drawn from speed and competition; the need to remain 100% focussed on your model car and trigger-finger as you race against your opponent at crazy speeds. The development of playsets such as Street Pursuit and Inner City Speed - with cool mini cars and police cars - has certainly helped them to keep children hooked. The first Scalextric sets appeared in the 1950's and the first Hornby models appeared in the 1920's. Between them, then, they can lay claim to over 130 years of life on the toy shelf.
